Dubai invents a robotic police officer.

On Tuesday, May 23 Dubai welcomed its first operational robot policeman at the opening of the 4th Gulf Information Technology (GITEX) conference. The Gulf Informational Technology is an annual consumer computer and electronics trade show exhibition conference that takes place in Dubai.

The exhibition attracts numerous participants who are IT professionals, technology enthusiasts, students and regional traders, where they show off their latest innovative gadgets, products and electronics. Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho also attended the exhibition along with officers from the US, France, Ireland, Brazil, China, the Philippine’s, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, Canada, Colombia and other countries to witness the exciting innovations.

While consumer favourites such as Canon, Dell, Samsung, HTC, and Hewlett-Packard showcased their latest ranges of innovations, the Department of smart services kicked off the exhibition show after launching the world’s first autonomous Robocop that is five feet, five inches tall and weighing 22 pounds ( 100 kilograms) that also speaks six languages including Arabic and English. The uniformed robot is equipped with an emotion detector that recognises gestures and hand signals from up to 1.5 metres away and can also read facial expressions. The robot can also take a bow, offer military salute and roll around on wheels.

The plan of introducing the robotic cop by the United Arab Emirate is an intended future strategy to have robot cops that will serve as about 25 percent of the police force, Dubai officials plan to accumulate this percentage by 2030.

The smart Dubai Government establishment services, partnered with GITEX to introduce the artificial intelligence robot in the attempt of introducing “Smart police” in the aim of assisting the police force and to help fight future crimes, keeping the city safe and improving the city’s level of happiness. Their mission is to deliver World-class smart services and infrastructure to create a better living environment in the city. The robotic officer is the first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates which is an example of the officials plan to turn Dubai into one of the safest cities on Earth. The robot will be used to tackle future, mysterious or unknown committed crimes such as terrorism in the City, theft, sedition and other commercial crimes, but for now, the Robot will assist people in the mall and on the streets.

Robots are no longer old Sci-fi ideas. There is a new Sherriff in town, the reality of robots is no longer coming, it has arrived.
