Technology Education and Design (TED) is an international movement that has opened up the conversation about forward thinking and how to share ideas with the aim of inspiring change. TED talks are videos captured from TED events that are freely available for the general public, where one can see talks from the likes of Bill Gates where one would normally pay large amounts of money to attend such an event. TEDx is an independently organised event that stems from the concept of TED which is about ‘ideas worth spreading’. The second TEDxPretoria was held on the 27th November 2014 at the Innovation Hub, Africa’s first accredited Technology and Science Park which was so relevant for this event.
The event MC was international beatboxer Morgan Beatbox who kept us entertained with his talent and warped sense of humour. He also showcased his unofficial world record of doing 8 sounds simultaneously, he left us in awe. The speaker line-up kicked off with Swiss-born innovator and investor York Zucchi who spoke about his journey as an entrepreneur, other speakers for the day included author and comedian Dan Packett, serial entrepreneur Oran Cohen, software developer Jabu Mtsweni, founder of Passionfor Darryn van der Berg who enlightened us on the subject of Gamification, Griffiths Sibeko spoke on the importance of building a collaborative ecosystem as entrepreneurs and the inventor of the Repurpose Schoolbag Thato Kgathlanye. A young female poet by the name of Puno Selesho rendered an item on changing the perception of Superheroes through poetry and Khethelo Nkosi gave an inspirational talk on Gratitude and how important it is in our daily lives.
From the creative lunch boxes that were done by Blank Canvas International, to the MC, to the quality of speakers that were present, this was an event worth attending. There was a lot of value that could be extracted from the talks, life changing ideals that hopefully the delegates took in. The take home for all of us was the lesson that we are all responsible for making a change and impact in our circles of influence and how we can mobilise ourselves and our businesses to contribute to the betterment of human kind.
TEDxPretoria is all about a collaborative effort by a group of dedicated team members with a common goal of inspiring change. Standard Bank was the headline sponsor for the event and the after party, and other sponsors included The Innovation Hub, T-Systems, Exxaro Resources, Blank Canvas International and the South African Innovation Network (SAINe). Media partnerships included Jacaranda 94.2, Talk Radio 702 and the likes of Nunnovaton, the event received a substantial amount of media coverage.
There is still a lot of work to be done in changing the perceptions of the global society, fortunetly we have platforms such as TEDxPretoria where knowledge sharing allows us to collaborate and make the relevant changes and adjustments to some of the most pressing issues we face today. It is inspiring to see how corporations and individuals alike are creating synergies inorder to utilise innovation and technology inorder to enforce sustainable change.
