Regional Connect Fostering Open Innovation: Zambian Company seeks a Solution

Regional ConnectAn organisation in the Environmental Sector in Zambia, Home Energy seeks innovative solutions through Regional Connect

Regional Connect has been on a journey to grow and pioneer Open Innovation (OI) throughout Africa. OI is a user-centric, crowd-sourced method by which organisations can develop innovative solutions to their most pressing challenges.

The latest challenge on Regional Connect is for a company that is looking to find methods to convert large and continuously growing stock piles of eucalyptus and pine tree sawdust which are generated as a by-product from sawmills in Zambia. This solution is meant to create cost effective, environmentally friendly and responsible fuel source for both local and domestic use. It would also be ideal if the solution could be used for firing and industrial heat driven processes such as boilers, steam cookers and so forth.

An ideal solution would be something that can play a role in ramping up the production output for the current figures, longer term solutions that is already in the latter stages can also be considered.
The above mentioned challenge is proof of growing OI trends in and around Africa. OI has also emerged globally to be a cutting-edge business practice as companies, universities, non-profit organisations and governments look outside their ‘four walls’ to try to accelerate innovation, encourage collaboration among the multi-helix actors, reduce time to market and meet the organisations’ bottom-line.

A public challenge briefing session is to be conducted in Zambia to discuss the challenge and the open innovation process used to find innovative solutions
