South African fashion designer, David tlale rocked his 6th Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week show on Monday 15th February. David, one of South Africa’s most-loved fashion designers, has pulled off another fashion extravaganza.
Born and bred in Vosloorus, which is in the east of Johannesburg, he spent most of his childhood there. David was raised by a single mother along with his two older sisters and a younger brother. In 1993 he went to Tshwane University of Technology to study Internal Auditing and barely a year after that he dropped out and enrolled for Fashion Design at the Vaal Triangle Technikon the same year.
He launched his brand in 2003 after he won the “Elle New Talent” competition in South Africa, and being noted as the Best Designer by the Sunday Times in South Africa, this award winning designer has proven that he is indeed a design force, with creations that go far beyond expectations.
Tlale’s proud moments of 2008 include designing a show stopper Couture master piece for British super model Jordan Dunn at the closing show for Virgin Mobile Cape Town Fashion Week. Chosen to be an ambassador for the Change-4-Ever campaign that aims to alleviate poverty in Southern Africa.
While his profile in the fashion world was on an upward slope, Tlale won ‘Designer of the Year” after show-casing his debut Spring/Summer 2010 Ready-to-Wear Collection that defied all expectations at Africa Fashion Week awards hosted by international super model Alek Wek. This Award afforded Tlale to debut his brand at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York Spring 2010 amongst other three African designers, courtesy of African Fashion International (AFI) and Arise Mag.
In this year’s edition of the New York Fashion Week, the collection, in true David Tlale nature, was extravagant. It was divided into 3 themes; one with a theme of black where we can see a lot of leather, absolute fabrics, feathers and gold embellishments come to life; another with a significant print that was translated into dresses, pant suits, jackets, dresses and more; and the third a neutral tone theme conveyed in silk and more fabrics.
The clothes were not the only key visual aspect guests had their eyes on, walking on the runway were models Tyson Beckford, Nkyhor Paul, Diandra Forrest and Aamito Stacie Lagum, need I say more?
David Tlale’s shining light in the fashion industry could have presumably gotten brighter after his extravagant show off during the Mercedes Benz New York fashion show, the opportunity of showing his designs alongside established designers like Victoria Beckham might as well be a turning point to his future success.
