28th February 2015 marks a glamorous, fun-filled invasion of Durban. To be hosted at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC), are the prestigious annual Metro FM Awards. This is not just any other night, but a night where local music creators get honoured for their dedication to the industry and their hard work. As the theme clearly states “Celebrating Greatness”.

This black carpet event, powered by the biggest urban radio station in the Country, Metro FM, will have 21 awards presented to artists. We will also sit back and watch hot live performances by the stars that have kept us dancing through the years, as well as collaborations that have hit our TV screens.

This 120 minute show spectacular will be aired on SABC1 at 20H00 on 28 February. As the country will anxiously be waiting to see how their SMS votes turned out. The categories under Albums are: Best African Pop Album, Best Compilation Album, Best Dance Album, Best Female Album, Best duo/group Album, Best Hip Hop Album, Best Urban Jazz Album, Best Kwaito Album, Best Male Album, Best Urban Gospel Album, and Best New Artist. The categories under singles are: Best Hit Single, Best Music Video, Best RnB Single, Best Remix and Best Collaboration.

There are then Metro FM Special Awards. These awards mean that, all artists nominated are automatically entered for the following categories: Best Produced Album, Best Styled Duo/Group. These are voted by the Metro FM Panel. Lastly, Listeners’ Voice, which is voted by Metro FM listeners via the Metro FM website.

Nominated for seven awards, Hip Hop Artist Casper Nyovest, who seems to be on the list of South Africa’s top Hip Hop cats says; “ Although I would love to scoop all seven, I must say, that Best Hip Hop album is one title I want most, this is the most sought after”.

Indeed Casper is right, as another Hip Hop cat, “All eyes on me” hit maker AKA, who recently toured West Africa, believes that Hip Hop is taking over the industry. Before going on his tour, AKA said, “It’s time that we as Africans connect and tell our own story”. What better way to beef up the story than to add these awards as solid proof as to who makes us move?

Speaking about moving, who will be moving and striding in style this year at the Metro FM Awards? Mminie Dlamini, who has been chosen to host these awards has boldly opened up that she would walk the black carpet in style, as she will be wearing a few frocks from New York Based fashion designer Michael Costello, who has dressed many celebrities including the likes of world icon Beyoncé Knowles.

Fashionista’s will surely be waiting to see celebrities designs, and we know that we should be popping eyes in awe as stars such as Bonang Matheba, Amanda Du Pont, Sibusiso Leope and Khanyi Mbau, to name a few, step in with style.

All roads sure do lead to the kingdom of Kwa-Zulu Natal, 28 February, it’s a date!
