Africans scoop the coveted Laureus World Sports Awards

Shanghai china, was the 2015 Laureus World Sports Awards host city, the Laureus World Sports Awards is an annual award ceremony honoring remarkable individuals from the world of sports along with the greatest sporting achievements throughout the year, and among other great athletes, two Africans in particular made the right recipients for their particular awards for their outstanding bravery.

Genzebe Dibaba

Ethopia's Genzebe Dibaba's superb 2014 saw her crowned Sportswoman of the year at the Laureus Sports AwardsThe world indoor champion Genzebe Dibaba was named sportswoman of the year at the Laureus World Sports Awards on Wednesday, April 15 2015.The middle-distance runner became the first sportsperson from Ethiopia to win an award in any category at the prominent event, which began in 2000.

Dibaba was rewarded the award for her 2014 season in which she set world indoor records for 1500m and 3000m as well as a world indoor best for two miles. She went on to record world-leading times over 5000m and 2000m before ending her season with 3000m victory at the IAAF Continental Cup in Marrakech, Morocco.

Although there were other athletics sportspeople like Renaud Lavillenie, Valerie Adams and Jo Pavey whom were nominated for other awards, Dibaba was the only winner from the sport of athletics on the night.

Strong, muscular and a brave sportsperson, the South African Stormers and Springbok flank Schalk Burger won the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award, Burger had a swelling next to his spinal cord and went into hospital for treatment, but developed life-threatening meningitis and was taken to intensive care. Miraculously, he battled for his life and returned to the sport he loves.

“The odds weren’t on my side, as I gather.  It’s probably one that I shouldn’t have come out being as normal as I am,” burger mentioned. “But for me, through a bit of luck and I think through a bit of stubbornness, I was able to pull through.”
