Nelson Mandela’s Journey at your fingertips

His memory lives on, and now you can be a part of it

South African tourism department and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have launched “Mandela Journey”, a new app that traces the footsteps of the late Nelson Mandela after his release from prison.

This app is said to be an efficient way for tourists to explore his life story, use it to plan their travels around major sites associated with Mandela, such as Qunu, his childhood village, his burial place and Robben Island, where he spent 18 of his 27 years in prison.

Madiba’s Journey is available for free on iTunes and Google Play.

It features 27 Madiba-inspired tourist attractions and sites of memory, one for each year he spent behind bars as a political prisoner. Users can view the attractions on a map, build their own itineraries and share their journeys on social media.

The foundation explains that, “the Madiba’s Journey app will enrich your quest as you walk in the footsteps of one of the world’s greatest icons, Nelson Mandela”.

There are plenty of comprehensible aspects: read about how each location helped to shape Mandela’s inspiring journey; find each location on your phone’s mapping system; get directions to the site. Visitor details are included, such as operating hours, tours, ticket prices and contact information.

South Africans will also get a better understanding of his life and have the opportunity to walk in his footsteps.

There is audio allowing you to “immerse yourself in narratives about the poignant moments that have secured these sites their place in South Africa’s history”.

Included are contact details for each site for more details and bookings; you can create and customise your itinerary before you take your journey through history; visit the gallery of images to get an idea of what you will see; as well as share “your thoughts, feelings and selfies with the world”.

Users are also invited to check in at each site – they unlock rewards according to the number of sites at which they check in.

It also offers real-time weather information at each location, how far away you are from each location and details of nearby attractions.
