David Gwenzi: Township Entrepreneur on the Rise

david-gwenzi-logoTwo things define an entrepreneur, your ability to innovate new ideas and your willingness to press on despite predicaments.  It is often said that it is not your past that defines you or your future, we always have a choice to move away from past experiences and create better paths for ourselves.

Diepsloot-based entrepreneur, David Gwenzi, is one example of someone who is rising above his circumstances and striving to make a name for himself in the design sector.

Having lost both his parents at a young age, the young businessman had to drop out of school when he was doing Grade 8 to make a living.  Escaping temptation to join gangs in the township, Gwenzi decided to keep himself busy by doing something worthwhile with his time by joining a volunteer programme that involved designing.  It is during this time that he discovered his passion for designing and sewing clothes.

DSC_0002-resizedDetermined to nurture his talent and to build his brand, also called David Gwenzi, the young entrepreneur decided to join Riversands Incubation Hub in Fourways, Johannesburg.  “Being based here is an opportunity to build the David Gwenzi brand, to network and to grow my business. That is why I’m here,” explains the talented designer.

Gwenzi currently employs two ladies who are also from the Diepsloot area where most of his loyal customers are based. He admits that he still struggles with marketing but plans on expanding his business to include a marketing department in the next coming years to reach a wider market.

“Riversands has helped me to network with potential investors and clients.  Being in this space means that more people can access my business, they get to see my designs.  It has given me hope that one day I will see my brand competing with leading brands not just in South Africa but internationally as well.”

The Riversands Incubation Hub, located within walking distance from the Diepsloot township, recruits and empowers upcoming entrepreneurs and SMMEs to become fully fledged businesses. The hub also offers a full-on campus incubation programme where it mentors, coaches, supports and incubates entrepreneurs for a period of 3 years.  It is the perfect platform for young business owners to broaden their market base.
