Crash Detect App to Represent SA on International Stage

VentStatistics on road safety reveal that South Africa has the highest number of road accidents, with the latest figures showing that 80% of the crash fatalities involved adults and males between of 19 and 34.

The amount of time it takes emergency accidents to reach the scene can make all the difference- this is why South African entrepreneur, Jaco Gerrits, decided to create a smartphone app that detects if you’re in a car crash and automatically dispatch emergency services to you.

Dubbed Crash Detech, the app runs in the background on iOS and Android phones and uses an algorithm that monitors sensors on mobile phones to detect impacts and send out alerts to emergency services.

The smartphone app reduces emergency response times by pinpointing the crash location.  It has won the innovator the SA leg of Chivas Regal The Venture competition, in which he will represent the country on an international stage, putting him in the running for winning up to R4.8 million in cash for his business.

ventureThe Venture competition aims to empower creative start-ups that use business innovatively to transform communities and solve global challenges.  Gerrits will now have an opportunity to pitch his business to The Venture’s global judging panel in front of a live audience of influencers and game changers. This exclusive event is expected to take place in July 2016.

The app is available on a free and paid version.  Monthly subscriptions start at R49pm which include benefits such as access to criminal law services, medical emergency assist, road cover and family protect. The company is also exploring new features which will encourage safer driving.

Well done to Gerrits for using entrepreneurship to provide a solution to a challenge that is affecting everyone in the country.
