Nabio Consulting in partnership with Merck (Pty) Ltd has hosted the first industry bridging day/workshop that was held at Merck Head Office, 1 Friesland Drive, Longmeadow Business Estate on 29 July 2016.
The Industry Bridging program (IBP) is an initiative of Nabio Consulting, designed to provide individuals in academia (Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral level) as well as Nanotechnology and Biotechnology entrepreneurs exposure to industry. It is also aimed at educating the public in careers in industry and highlight opportunities such as industrial funding, services, collaboration and networking platforms. For industry, this is an important platform for the promotion of products and services, and engages with academia and business.
“This initiative will be helpful to postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students who are interested in engaging with industry but lack the necessary exposure and entrepreneurs partners within industry.” says Chair of IBP, Dr Steven Mufamadi at Merck Bridging Day. According to Dr Mufamadi industry has numerous opportunities but the major barrier is the absence of a platform for industry to engage with the public.
The Merck Bridging Day was attended by approximately 50 delegates at the doctoral and postdoctoral level, representing the University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, North West University, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, University of South Africa, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and National Institute for Occupational Health & National Health Laboratory Service (NIOH-NHLS).
While the IBP focused on the fields of Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutics and Biosciences the thrust of this initiative is to foster collaboration to improve Health, Water and Energy in South Africa.
