The value of South Africa’s township economy is estimated at around R100 billion. That factor alone tells us that township business have the potential to become the main drivers of economic growth in the country.
We’ve seen township entrepreneurs coming up with ingenious business ideas that have transformed communities, we’ve seen business owners presenting established companies with great business opportunities- it is a fact that kasi entrepreneurs, with enough support from the government and the private sector, can boost the country’s economy.
Recognising entrepreneurial talent in townships, the Gauteng Provincial Government is once again offering township entrepreneurs in the province an opportunity to enter the Township Entrepreneurship Awards (TEA).
These awards are an initiative by the Gauteng Department of Economic Development to revitalise the province’s townships’ economy and build and cement confidence in township based businesses. The department’s main objectives are To boost the Gauteng township economy, by drawing public attention towards township businesses and their successes and to unlock business opportunities in the townships and inspire investor confidence.
Entries for the TEA will be opened on 28 August and they will close on 16th September at 4pm. To qualify, you must be a South African citizen, have a business registered and operating in Gauteng, have been operating for at least two years by 31st March this year, have an annual turnover not exceeding R2 Million.
Entries are open in a number of categories including transport, automotive and components; Construction, Building and Real Estate; Social and Community; New/Start up enterprise, among others.
Nominees will participate in a fourteen-part reality television series that will see the entrepreneurs going through a series of real and practical business experiences intended to sharpen and enhance their business skills. The various category winners will be revealed at the awards gala ceremony.
Judges will make their final decision in February 2017 and winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 11th March 2017. All those interested can apply via the TEA website http://www.townshipentrepreneurshipawards.co.za/.
