The healthcare system in South Africa fails to provide quality care to the majority of people in the country. It is reported that private healthcare provides for only 16% of the country’s population, because of the high costs involved. This leaves millions of underprivileged South Africans subjected to poor healthcare from the public sector.

In an effort to provide affordable primary healthcare solution for all South Africans and to bridge the gap between the private and public healthcare system, Gary Hill and Trevor Brewer co-founded Get Health- a uniquely individualized method of delivering healthcare.

Get Health aims to provide an affordable primary healthcare solution which conforms to international standards, to all clinics in the country, one at a time.

“At Get health we make use of two important health care workers; the health coach who is able to triage a patient and perform point-of-care testing, and the clinical associate, who is a new cadre of health worker in South Africa trained in primary health care provision and emergency medicine. In making use of these health care workers, a patient’s health care needs are effectively and timeously identified so that the most appropriate care for this individual can be provided,” writes the company.

The services offered by the company are somewhat similar to those provided by private doctors but at a lower cost. According to the founders, the clinic operates on a fee-for-service model. Before patients are referred to Get Health’s healthcare workers, patients must first visit local health professionals for consultations.

Get Health consultation prices range from R165 to R200, covering everything from common everyday sicknesses to chronic diseases.

“It was obvious that the system has fundamental challenges. The public sector is over-burdened with demand due to lack of affordability of the private sector to the majority of the population. Public providers are forced to see hundreds of patients a day often resulting in decreased patient satisfaction and quality,” says Brewer.

According to the company website, Get Health’s goal is to be the leading supplier of primary healthcare services to those who are seeking patient centric, affordable, quality healthcare.

“Ensuring access to patient-centric, affordable primary healthcare for all is at the heart of our mission. Our innovative delivery model allows our team of providers to provide each and every patient with quality healthcare. Get Health will provide the blue print to what is possible in the South African healthcare environment,” the statement further reads.
