Anyone who has ever planned an event knows that choosing a venue has to be one of the most stressful tasks. Choosing where to host your event is the most important decision in event planning, yet it’s not the easiest thing to do.

The key is to find an innovative event venue that is affordable and easily accessible, right? But let’s face it, conference venues offered by hotels are not always what we’re looking for and are often too expensive if not reserved well in advance. There’s finally a startup that understands this and aims to help in this regard- Cape Town’s EventRoom, just what the doctor ordered!

Some call it the “AirBnB for event spaces,” EventRoom is a local site that helps you find the perfect venue for your event. It’s an easy-to-use website where both commercial and private venue owners can list their spaces for free.

Founded by sisters Moira Johnston and Nicky Rosin, the company’s goal is to list all of South Africa’s most exciting, unique and beautiful venues on one site, instead of only catering to a niche market, such as weddings.

“Absolutely any space can be listed, from an art gallery to an airplane hangar, a dance studio to a treehouse, a barn or even a private mansion. So you’ll be spoiled for choice and be able to easily find unique new spaces at which to host your events,” reads the EventRoom website.

The company has also partnered with an event planning company to allow users to easily organise other aspects of their event through the portal. Event planners will make direct contact with you through the site, either via a quote request or a direct message. You can then send quotes and upload other relevant documents, such as invoices or menu plans, directly through the messaging system.

It’s also a great way to earn an extra income for homeowners. “The other benefit of EventRoom is that we offer venue owners and private home owners the opportunity to make money from renting their properties for events – a system similar to Airbnb”, explains co-founder and CEO, Moira Johnston.

Listings are standardised- showing venue pictures, starting prices, facility descriptions and location so that comparing venues is easy and convenient. There are no sign up or subscription fees.

The portal currently has over 420 listings across South Africa, from wine farms to private beachside mansions to conference centres to lighthouses. Be sure to check it out!
