The Focus 1 is here to change how we approach education and learning in classrooms


As Africans, we know all too well the endless debates on education as a whole, grappled by the fast decline in the quality of education but also the rate at which, it has become extremely expensive. More expensive than the average household can afford, this intrinsically leaves the playing field at a fair disadvantage for those who are not able to afford a basic human right.

The world as we know it currently has become fast paced meaning the rate of education and information offered by most schools is also changing. Harvard and NASA scientists have now developed the world’s first integrated classroom system that improves education through real-time attention level reports.
This is a wearable device that was specifically designed to detect and analyse users attention levels. Through science and research by phycologists, a lot of studies have been written formulating how the human brain is capable of learning and how people’s brains vary in learning functions.

How the Focus 1 works
The Focus 1 has a proprietary hardware and an algorithm based on a formula developed by NASA. Focus 1 device is able to accurately translate brain signals into attention levels. In a classroom setting using the Focus 1, teachers are immediately able to tell the attention levels of each student at the beginning of each class and if they are in a low or high attention state.

Through this information, teachers are then able to know when they need to reengage their students when the class average attention levels are too low and which student requires individual attention in terms of understanding the course material.

Lesson Reports
After each class, teachers are able to engage in a systematic-reflection of their teaching by utilizing the classroom attention level report. This offers teachers insight into what works and what doesn’t work in their classroom and what needs to change in terms of how they are teaching certain lessons.
This creates an opportunity for a developmental foundation in terms of new approaches in teaching, in turn increasing the quality of education in our society. This makes teachers more cognitive in the methods they choose to use and take note of students that struggle in classrooms.
Individual Student reporting

An additional aspect that is highly functional as well as effective in tracking learning progress, for student and parents, is the self-assessment tool to develop them further outside of the classroom. These two reporting assessments aids teachers and parents combined in assisting the learners in areas they need to improve but also areas they excel in.
This device will make a huge impact on education, especially in Africa where we need to take responsibility in how teachers engage with learners and whether the quality of the learning material is on par with the rest of the world. Let’s aim to provide technological solutions for Africans in Africa.
